ERRATA FOR THE ADC CD-ROM, VOLUME I April 3, 1995 Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX) The Astronomical Data Center CD-ROM, Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume I, has been publically available since November 1, 1991. Unfortunately, but not unexpectedly, some errors have been discovered in the CD-ROM catalogs. Each of the following error reports are credited to the party that brought the problems to our attention, and the error reports are in their own words. We ask that any other users of the ADC CD-ROM who discover errors or inconsistencies contact us so that we can get the information out to our users. In the future, any errors brought to our attention will be published in the ADC Electronic News, which is distributed four times a year to an automatically maintained electronic mailing list. To subscribe to the ADC E-News, send E-mail to Majordomo@nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov. In the body of the mail (not the subject line), put the following command: SUBSCRIBE ADC-SUBSCRIBERS After your subscription has been accepted, you will receive two E-mail messages. The first is a standard Majordomo response and the second is a "welcome" message with specific information concerning the list. Some of the errors below refer to problems in FITS headers. FITS files can not generally be corrected with standard text editors. In order to correct the FITS files, one must first copy the text file version of the FITS header from the CD-ROM onto a writable disk. Then with a text editor, make the necessary changes. A short C program will take the pieces of the FITS file (headers and data) and put them back together again. The program and documentation, are available by anonymous FTP to nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov in directory "pub/ADC/software/joinfits". If you encounter any problems, please contact me by E-mail at adc_help@nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov. 1 Table of Contents CD-ROM Directory (Unix notation) Submitted by ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ASTROM/FK5 Roman (Hughes STX) ASTROM/FK5 Schwan (ARI) ASTROM/PARALLAX van Altena (Yale) COMBINED/BSC5 Narron (IPAC) NONSTELL/GALAXIES/ABZWCLUS Tildsley (U. Schwan, Astronomisches Rechen-Institut -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In your electronic publication, ADC Electronic News, Vol. 1, Issue 2 and, in particular, in Issue 3, you are reporting on " Errors in the DM numbers in the FK5". It is important for our institute to make clear, that these errors on the CD-ROM are neither caused by corresponding errors in the printed version of the FK5 catalogue nor in the machine-readable version sent to your institution. Our file as well as the printed catalogue contain the correct numbers. 3 Since the first tape version I sent to ADC did not contain DM numbers at all, I assume, that some cross identification had been made at ADC and that you copied that file on the CD-ROM and not the second version of the FK5 catalogue, which I sent together with the FK5 Extension. I would appreciate very much if you could make more clear that the errors do not come from the data you got from Astronomisches Rechen-Institut. With kind regards, Yours sincerely, Heiner Schwan -- Editor's Note: Indeed, the errors where the result of using data from another catalog that contained the misidentifications. The correct version of the FK5, ADC catalog number 1149A, is available by request from the ADC Online Information System and NDADS. L. Brotzman (Hughes STX) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General Catalog of Trigonometric Parallaxes (ASTROM/PARALLAX) Submitted by W. van Altena, Yale University ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To: Users of the General Catalogue of Trigonometric Parallaxes, Preliminary Version of 1991 on the Astron. Data Center CDROM. From: W. van Altena, Yale Astronomy Dept., P.O. Box 6666, New Haven, CT (203)-432-3020 - vanalten@yalastro.bitnet Re: Precession error in the 1900 R.A.s coded "A". An unfortunate coding error slipped by us in the final formatting program for the preliminary version of the Yale Parallax Catalogue, 1991 (YPCP) when allowing for the variety of units possible for the proper motion. The error affects only those right ascensions from the ARICAT coded "A". In those cases, the original epoch and equinox was B1950.0 and the "cos delta" term in the proper motion in right ascension was inadvertently omitted by us from the precession from B1950.0 to B1900.0. This error can amount to several seconds of time during the 50-year interval. Fortunately, an easy fix is available that will usually provide right ascensions accurate to a few hundredths of a second of time at 1900.0 since only the proper motion was omitted. The algorithm suggested to correct the "A" right ascensions is: R.A. (Correct) = R.A.(YPCP 1900) - (50/15)*PM(RA "/yr)*[1/cos(Dec) - 1.0]. In a similar way, the secular variation (SV) in right ascension for 100 years can be corrected for these same "A" stars by using the following algorithm. SV (Correct) = SV (YPCP) + (100/15)*PM(RA "/yr)*[1/cos(Dec) - 1.0]. The error in the 1900 right ascensions corrected by the above algorithm is normally less than a few hundredths of a second of time. However, for those cases where the declination is greater than 80 degrees, the error can exceed one second of time. 4 I regret the occurrence of this error and any inconvenience that it may have caused. In addition, I am grateful to Dr. F. Crifo and Dr. H. Jahreiss for drawing my attention to it as soon as they discovered the error. Sincerely, William F. van Altena. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bright Star Catalog, 5th Edition (COMBINED/BSC5) Submitted by R. It is surrounded by records with an RA of 11hr. The minutes field is consistent with its position [in the table] so I suspect that the hour field should read 11, not 12. Bertini, U. of Colorado ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for the info concerning the ADC CDROM. One major mistake that I found was in the ASCII FITS header file for the mercg catalog. The fortran formats and the starting columns didn't line up for the RA and DEC fields. [Editor's note: The specific problem is the TFORM keywords for fields RAH, RAM, RAS, and DecM -- fields 4, 5, 6, and 8 respectively. In each case, the format is given as 'I3' when it should, in fact, be 'I2'. Corrections should be applied to file MERCG.HDR. -- Lee E. However, I found that only 245,889 sources were listed, instead of 252,889 sources as mentioned in the Explanatory Supplement (document file). Since all data I got are correctly formatted, and the missing number exactly equals 7,000 sources, I suspect that the error might not be due to transmission problems. I also checked the beginning and the end of the catalog file for a single block of missing sources but it looks all right. In file PSC.DOC, page 5, section B.1, second sentence, for: The first is a 160 byte file containing the 252,889 sources..... read: The first is a 160 byte file containing the 245,889 sources...... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ultraviolet Bright Star Spectrophotometric Catalog (SPECTRO/UVBS) Submitted by W. Landsman, Hughes STX -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have found a problem with the TD-1 bright star spectrophotometric catalog (UVBS) as it appears in the ADC CD-ROM. The problem is the loss of precision in the fluxes of the TD1 spectrophotometric catalog due to the processing done at Goddard. To quote from Section 4 of the documentation: "The flux was initially given at each of the 61 wavelengths in a E9.3 format in units of erg/(cm^2 s^1 A^1). These quantities were multiplied by 10^10 so that they could be given in a F6.2 format in units of 10^-10 erg/(cm^2 s^1 A^1), thus reducing the logical record length by 183 bytes." Unfortunately, the above process takes a flux of 5.23E-12 and transforms it to 0.05 losing two significant digits. The number of stars with fluxes less than 1e-11 is quite small, but many stars have fluxes less than 1e-10 and lose 1 significant digit in the ADC CD-ROM version of the catalog. -- Editor's Note: This problem is another that was generated by the ADC itself. The original version of the TD1 will be recovered from our "cold" archive and will replace the erroneous version early in 1993. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAO-HD-GC-DM Cross Index (CROSSID/SAOHDDM) Submitted by Carl S. S. Cole published in the ADC Electronic News, Vol. 3, Issue 4. For SAO 187331, DM designation is already corrected ( no error !). For SAO 190341, DM is again correct, and if one would like to have BD number, it should be "BD-23 442". In the above mentioned compilation, I frequently relied upon this correspondence table, and found many dubious errors. I tried to make a systematic validation comparing to the CSI data ( I have 1979 edition ), and I hope to report the errata in near future. Please find appended the the summary list of the errata. I am afraid that it might be too large to be included in the ADC Electronic News. You may pick up the essential items of the errata at your disposal. I hope the whole text should be included in the anonymous ftp file for the NASA/ADC CD-ROM errata. The data format of the main files of the Michigan Surveys seemed to be changed when they were edited in the CD-ROM. The document files prepared earlier at the ADC by Dr. Warren et al. were adopted as they were. Therefore there appeared some inconsistencies between the content descriptions in the documents and the real data files. Some of the discrepancies were corrected in the FITS header files while others still remained. Please see below for the details. 12 By the way, I would like to comments on the errata for the SAO-HD-GC-DM by Dr. C. Besides there are many diversities from the standard format of source identifications, espe- cially of Verons' QSO/AGN Catalog and OSU Radio Sources. There are also many "DITTO"s in OSU source identifications, which may be troublesome in case of direct access (even in on case(IRAS 06053-0622), DITTO precedes to the actual identification(PKS 0605-06)). Some errors were recently found in the psc.doc file: In Table X.B.1, the last three entries should read: 139 MHCON Possible number of HCON --- I2 141 FCOR Flux correction factor (times 1000) --- 4I4 (1 value per band) 157 SPARE 3 Spare blanks --- 3A1 Table X.B.4 was truncated at the end of the table, and should be added with following data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 32 IRAS Small Type Blank Scale Strucure Field1 Hex coded bands Field2 Blank Field3 Blank ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 39 OSU Radio Type Blank + Field1 Frequency Field2 Flux(deci Jy) Field3 0 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 40 Michigan Type Class ** Spectral Field1 Mag(decimag) Field2 HD number (low byte) Field3 HD number (high byte) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 41 Serendipitous Type Blank Survey Field1 Hexcoded SSC bands Field2 First SSC flux(m Jy) Field3 Second SSC flux ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** Source name and type fields were combined to hold spectral type and class. + Catalog numbers 33-38 reserved for internal use. Table XII.A.3 should be corrected as follows, though this table is no longer significant now that Table X.B.1 was already revised. 1) The format for MHCON should read I2 for 12. 2) The start byte for SPARE should read 157 for 149. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21
